Tani Otoshi

Tani Otoshi - Valley Drop

Tani-otoshi can be performed in many ways, referring to the drop of someone falling from a cliff backwards, the English for this technique helps the 'pure' way that this technique is performed - tori steps behind the uke, both legs performing a 'V' shape, one leg in front and one behind.

The video shows an added movement of the arm across uke's chest, to push more to the ground rather than pulling down. Koshiki-no-kata (the only Kodokan kata where this technique is performed, and indeed the only kata that I am aware that it is) shows this technique from a kneeling position - demonstrating the wide variety of ways this technique can be performed.
